Analisis del Proyecto comunitario. 2019-2020


Introduction

The students are around 30, they had a low level  English, we could say that they are folk beginner, It is a lower division course, Some physical elements of the learning environment that could affect is the poor condition of the classrooms and the lack of learning tools, some students had a problem to acquire the new language due to the low English learning in their high school, the observation was carried out in systematic engineer at the University of cordoba.

Literature review of needs analysis

Needs analysis involves doing researchers with the learners in order to find out what their learning needs are. knowing that a good understanding of learner needs can help us to create a successful course. for that reason, we use need analysis because it lets us the interface design will be based on this information. Faulty assumptions or goals (about learners) will lead to a faulty design that is difficult to fix once in place. to this need analysis, the method or the instrument to gathering data we used is Questionnaires.

Target situation analysis

-   We can conclude that the students of 4th semester of systems engineering at the University of Córdoba are in a process of learning the English language, this being the non-native language of which they are taught a basic vocabulary related to everyday context issues. In contrast to the above, the content of this course does not meet the relevant need that students have regarding the management of specific vocabulary in their field of study. Therefore, the lack of coupling between the acquisition of the foreign language and the needs of the systems engineering students is exposed; This resulted in the inappropriate use of words in contexts and purposes that might not be the ones required, due to the eagerness, confusion, and ignorance in the language domain.


Present Situation Analysis

Students take the course because technical vocabulary is necessary for the different software tools that are handled in their professional careers and because English is necessary for this career due to the massive English that they found in the different programs and software. These students have different ways of learning, through videos, grammar exercises, listening, texts. there is a minimum of resources in this area we can find video beam, textbook, and speakers to develop the classes. the learners are students in 4 semesters of the systems engineering program and there are 4 levels of English in which they work 2 hours per week (Mondays). This course will take place at the University of Córdoba and will take place every Monday from 8:00 p.m. until 9:59 p.m.



Learning Situation Analysis

There are many reasons to attend an English course in this program, one of the most important is that the student engineer is able to create and understand software based on English structures, in this way they can also improve their second language skills, their attitude was very positive and they like English very much, because they have games in English, and it is very necessary to have knowledge of vocabulary, they said that the problems in their program are that the time is not enough, they said they would like that in the program increases more hours, some preferred ways to learn English are to listen to music and play games, they said that in this way they have learned many words related to English, which they can then put into context, the strategies that they use are groups and couple work because they feel more comfortable in the classes and also argue that in this way they can learn from the student who has more knowledge.

Results

According to the previous need analysis we need to create an English course based on the statistics that we found the students need to have a course with a bigger intensity of hours in which the vocabulary will be focused on in their careers.
The 50% of students think that speaking is the most difficult ability to improve and they do not have enough hours to develop and they say that is very important to get more vocabulary because all of the program words are in English
Also, we need to add new strategies to make the students find the motivation to practice English even when they are not in classes and in this way the class will be active and engage with them.
Students need a place where they can carry out their classes in a good environment where they can have enough adequate resources in which they can find easy tools for their knowledge.
The reasons, why we are designing this course, are because the students need to know a high level of English due to their career relies much on English vocabulary.
We hope that this course can learn a technical vocabulary that helps them to manage in the system engineer field and also, they can get engage with the English classes.
The strategies then we will use are role plays, vocabulary worksheets in groups and reading activities.
To conclude we can say that we need to apply lots of new strategies as we said before to have good results to students get a higher English level interest in their English classes.


Approach to course design

Skills-centred course design

The skills-centred approach will be used in this course due to this one helps the students to develop their skills and strategies. In order to improve their knowledge according to their needs using speaking strategies and vocabulary learning. The use of a skills-centred approach is a valuable tool as it considers linguistic facts in terms of how the mind of the learner processes them and not as given, unchangeable information, it manages to generate content based on the positive factors that the learners bring to the course. The relationship between our need analysis and this approach is that our need analysis is focused on the development of the skills we will try students get a piece of a better understanding of information.

Key concepts

Speaking In this course, Speaking will be the skill that we are going to develop during the course due to speaking is the  process of constructing meaning that involves producing and receiving information which is very important since communication is necessary to do daily activities. According to Widdowson (1978) "Speaking as an instance of the use, therefore, is a part of reciprocal exchange in which both reception and production play a part which involves both receptive and productive participation." (p.59)
